Belief systems that reject universal human rights may be practised privately, but they must not receive state protection, institutional funding, or legal privilege. Sharia is not simply religious belief; it is a legal system that mandates unequal treatment under the law, denies freedom of religion, prescribes death for apostasy and homosexuality, permits slavery, and legitimizes violence through jihad.
