The transformation of non-Islamic countries is accomplished in several ways but especially by accommodating demands for sharia [1]. Halal food is one example: Halal means that something is permitted according to sharia.
Believing this to be a ‘good thing’ many non-Muslims will happily participate, eating halal food, donating to Islamic charities or investing in ‘Islamic ethical finance’, which must have a Sharia board and be Sharia compliant thereby aiding in the expansion of Sharia.
The halal industry contributes to an Islamic tax of 2.5% called ‘zakat’ - often referred to as an Islamic ‘charity’. The seventh category of zakat is ‘The Cause of Allah’ – jihad – which sharia describes as a ‘communal obligation’ [1]. In this way, the profits generated by the sale of halal products actually supports jihad against ‘unbelievers.
By overlooking the fact that sharia does not recognize equality before the law or freedom of religion, most non-Islamic countries are not exercising the necessary precautions to resist the incursion of sharia through Islamic organizational infrastructure and are not informed that when it comes to halal food, if it is not available the Islamic principle of ‘darura’ applies.
Koran 2:173 “He has only forbidden to you dead animals, blood, the flesh of swine, and that which has been dedicated to other than Allah . But whoever is forced [by necessity], neither desiring [it] nor transgressing [its limit], there is no sin upon him…”
Additionally, when halal options are introduced, Muslims may face pressure from within the Islamic community to choose only those options. Instead of giving more choices, this actually takes choices away from those who may prefer not to conform to sharia.
It is time to rethink support for halal in all its forms and carefully consider the consequences.
