Apostasy and the Mayor of London

Updated: Jan 3

Sadiq Khan has been awarded with a ‘Knighthood’ in the U.K. New Year Honours list [1].  This is the same mayor who, only a few short months ago, said that religion is an immutable characteristic that can't be changed [2]. In this, the mayor aligns himself with Islamic law rather than British law, despite having completed the English Law Society finals and practicing as a solicitor.

Islamic (Sharia) law:

  • Koran 4:89 "They wish you would disbelieve as they disbelieved so you would be alike. So do not take from among them allies until they emigrate for the cause of Allah . But if they turn away, then seize them and kill them wherever you find them and take not from among them any ally or helper."

  • Ibn Kathir's tafsir (commentary) on K4:89 ""If they abandon Islam, they should be killed where you find them, for abandoning Islam is an act of war."

  • Reliance of the Traveller (manual of Sharia law) o8.1-8.4 'When a person who has reached puberty and is sane voluntarily apostatizes from Islam, he deserves to be killed. If he refuses to repent, he is immediately killed... there is no indemnity or expiation for killing an apostate as 'this is someone who deserves to die.'

Exactly how pervasive is the requirement to follow sharia in Britain – and is it fitting to award a knighthood to someone whose principles conflict with the freedom of religion guaranteed by British law [3]?
